Therapy for Troubled Teenagers

Transformative Therapy for Adolescents

Common issues that causes parents to struggle with their teens: Depressed, Angry, Destructive, Volatile, Nasty, Withdrawn, Secretive, Lying, Stealing, Sexually Active, Eating Disorders (Anorexia, Bulimia, Body Dysmorphia, Binge Eating), Substance Use/Abuse, Failing in School, ‘Unhealthy’ Friends, Battles at Home, Divorced or Absent Parents

I love to work with teenagers. Why? Because I was one once. And I knew a lot of them. It can still recall the time vividly, though it was many years ago. I encountered all of the issues listed above.

No one who knows me now would ever connect the adult me with the teen me. I grew up, I found my way, I am productive, responsible, self-confident, and have been happily married for 20+ years. I feel compassion for how it is to be a teenager in these times and in this world. Because I am not the parent, I don’t take it personally. Because I have specific skills, I can help teens learn how to get in touch with their authentic and best selves.

Believe it or not, we all have innate wisdom. Yes, teens, too.

Learning about the nature of the mind and feelings can help humans of any age transform their lives from the inside out. And I notice that the adolescent years are such a great time to interject this knowing. If only I knew then what I know now!

These young people are trying to find their way, but the education system rarely teaches the skills they need to deal with the surging teenage emotions, the changes, the spiraling thinking, and the attempts to become individuals without losing the love of those they care for and who caretake them. It can be a rocky road – but just one insight, once shift in perspective, can literally change their whole world (and that of the family world too).

If you look at social media sites, you may be shocked to see the number of teens who are reaching out online for help with depression, suicidal thoughts, fears, anger, numbness, sexuality, and (way too) frequently say they have no one to talk to and that their parents would never understand.

Sadly, there are also many cases of teen suicide, and the family members are shocked and ‘had no idea’.

This is not for parents to take personally, but just to be aware that many, many teens could really use a guide to help them navigate these difficult years. You think your adult world is crazy? Well, the teenage world can seem way crazier, even hopeless.

And, directly for you teens, it used to be that you had to have parental consent to get help from a therapist. Recently Colorado Law changed the rules so that teens from 12 years and up can seek outpatient help without their parent’s consent. (Unless you are suicidal, or a threat to yourself or others, in which case I must contact your parents.)

And, for you parents, if you need support for your challenges, you can discover how to bring back the heart of parenting and learn new ways to reconnect to your child.

Check out my Pay From The Heart system which is like therapy by donation and allows me to help those you can’t afford to pay much, or anything, for therapy sessions.

Sessions are always (by law, and by my own code) 100% confidential. I am not even permitted to share whether or not a person is a client of mine, even if asked. The only times I may (and must) break the confidentiality is if the client plans to hurt themselves or others, or if sexual abuse of a minor is involved.

Vibrant Youths

You should watch when you talk to young men about responsibility. They’re so thrilled about it. It just blows me away. Grow up and do something useful? Really? I can do that? Oh, I’m so excited by that idea. No one ever mentioned that before. Rights, rights, rights, rights. Jesus. It’s appalling. People have had enough of that. And they better have, because it’s a non-productive mode of being. Responsibility, man. That’s where the meaning in life is.”- Jordan Peterson
